Andre Braugher, known for his remarkable role as Captain Ray Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, among many other noteworthy roles, died on Monday at the age of 61. His death was confirmed by his longtime publicist, Jennifer Allen.

Born in Chicago, he completed his graduation from Stanford University, after which he joined the Juilliard School of Drama.

He got a breakthrough for playing the role of a union soldier who enters an all-African American regiment in 1989’s motion picture Glory. The film won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington. Despite the role, he told The Associated Press in 2019 that he strived to find work in Hollywood where roles for African American actors were “few and far between, period.”

He was highly praised for his stellar performance as Detective Frank Pembleton, where he played the character of the detective for seven seasons in Homicide: Life on the Street. This show earned him an Emmy for his notable role as the lead actor in the drama series in 1998.

The second time he bagged the award was for outstanding lead actor as Nick Atwater in the FX Network production, Thief. In the series, he played the role of the leader of a heist, managing a high-stakes operation with family struggles.

Throughout his career, spanning around 30 years, he was nominated 11 times in total for the Emmy Awards. He often starred in roles encircling the military and police, including his unforgettable role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Tributes have started flowing on social media from many of his co-stars and other eminent personalities. Terry Crews, his co-star in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, wrote on Instagram: “I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you, and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts.

He is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, his co-star in Homicide, to whom he was married for 30 years. He is also survived by his three sons, Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley, as well as his brother Charles and mother Sally.
