Political Tensions Soar in West Bengal as TMC MP’s Car Attacked, BJP Calls Incident “Staged”

Political tensions flared in Arambagh on Monday after an alleged attack on Mitali Bag, a Member of Parliament from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), ahead of a key rally led by party leader Abhishek Banerjee. The incident took place near Goghat during the final phase of campaigning for the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026.

According to TMC sources, Bag’s vehicle was targeted with heavy stone pelting while she was en route to attend Banerjee’s roadshow. The attack reportedly caused significant damage to her car and left her injured, after which she was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Visuals from the scene showed a visibly shaken Bag breaking down as she described the incident, stating that she narrowly escaped a more serious outcome.

The situation in the region had already been tense, with earlier reports of clashes during a rally organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its candidate. BJP leaders alleged that their supporters were attacked by TMC workers, resulting in injuries and damage to vehicles. In contrast, the TMC accused BJP supporters of retaliating by attacking Bag’s convoy.

The BJP has strongly denied any involvement in the attack on the MP. Party spokesperson Debjit Sarkar termed the incident “staged,” alleging it was an attempt to gain political sympathy ahead of polling. As both parties continue to trade accusations, the incident has further intensified the already charged political atmosphere in the constituency.

With the election entering a crucial phase, the clash highlights ongoing concerns over law and order and political violence in the state, raising questions about security arrangements during campaign events.
