In a major step towards strengthening food safety and preventing adulteration, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has made food-testing kits mandatory at all sweet and farsan shops across the city.The move is aimed at enabling shopkeepers to conduct primary tests on food products and detect possible adulteration. Customers will also be able to get a basic indication of whether food items are fit for consumption.
According to the civic authorities, the testing kit will contain materials required for preliminary food adulteration checks, including nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, iodine solution, sugar granules, Petri dishes, test tubes, gel rods and tissue paper rolls.The AMC has also directed food businesses to keep the kits available at their premises. If a shopkeeper fails to maintain the required testing facility, action may be taken under food safety regulations.
CCTV Cameras Mandatory in Hotel and Restaurant Kitchens
Along with testing kits at sweet and farsan shops, the civic body has also instructed around 11,150 hotels and restaurants in Ahmedabad to complete the installation and operationalisation of CCTV cameras in their kitchens at the earliest.The initiative is intended to improve transparency and ensure hygiene and food-safety practices inside commercial kitchens. The authorities are expected to monitor compliance and take action against establishments that fail to follow the directives.
The AMC has further appealed to food business operators to strictly follow food safety norms and maintain cleanliness and quality standards to protect consumers.
