Gujarat’s Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam has reached its maximum reservoir level of 138.68 metres (455 feet), marking the seventh time the dam has attained full capacity since reaching its full height in 2017. The reservoir has a gross storage capacity of 9,460 million cubic metres.
The dam has reached full capacity in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and now 2026. The development is significant for Gujarat’s drinking-water and irrigation requirements. According to the report, water from the reservoir supplies drinking water to more than 4 crore people, covering 10,453 villages, 190 towns and 7 municipal corporations.
To mark the occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the Sardar Sarovar Dam complex at Ekta Nagar (Kevadia) and performed a traditional water-worship ceremony, offering a coconut and chunri amid Vedic chants. Senior officials of the Narmada Nigam and members of the state Cabinet were also expected to attend.
