The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to public safety and humanitarian service through the exemplary actions of its Route Patrolling Vehicle (RPV) team, who successfully prevented a suicide attempt on the Tapi River Bridge.
On July 12, 2026, at approximately 20:55 hours, during routine highway surveillance on NH-48 on the Surat side of the Tapi River Bridge, the on-duty Route Patrolling Vehicle (RPV) team, led by Route Patrol Officer (RPO) Mr. Hiren Mistri, noticed an individual attempting to jump into the Tapi River due to severe personal distress.
Recognizing the imminent danger, the RPV team responded with exceptional alertness, courage, and presence of mind. Without delay, the team rushed to the spot, physically intervened, and safely restrained the individual, successfully preventing the suicide attempt and saving a precious human life.
Following the rescue, the team promptly initiated the prescribed emergency response procedures. The local police were immediately informed to ensure necessary legal formalities and safety oversight. Simultaneously, an ambulance was summoned to the site, and the individual was shifted to the Government Hospital for medical evaluation, professional psychological support, and counselling.
The swift and compassionate response of RPO Mr. Hiren Bhai Mistri and the RPV crew highlights the critical role played by NHAI’s highway patrol teams in ensuring not only the safety of road users but also the well-being of individuals in distress.
