The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has faced a fresh political challenge in Punjab after three of its sitting MLAs resigned from the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The developments have come at a crucial time, ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The latest leader to resign is Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, MLA from Amritsar North and a former IPS officer. He submitted his resignation to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and also quit the primary membership of AAP. Earlier, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, MLA from Sanaur, and Chetan Singh Jouramajra, MLA from Samana, had also announced their resignations.
All three leaders subsequently reached the BJP headquarters in Delhi and joined the party. Their exit has raised questions about internal differences within the Punjab unit of AAP and the party’s political position ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh had earlier been suspended from AAP for five years in 2025 over alleged anti-party activities. He had also expressed dissatisfaction with the state government’s handling of several issues, including sacrilege cases. The recent developments have intensified political discussions in Punjab, with both AAP and BJP responding to the changes in the state’s political landscape.
