Gujarat Local Elections 2026: Low Early Turnout in Civic Polls
Gujarat is witnessing a crucial phase of grassroots democracy as voting for local body elections is underway across the state today (April 26). However, the initial voter response has been relatively subdued, with turnout recorded at below 23% as of 11:30 am, according to official data.
Polling is being conducted for 9,259 seats across 393 local bodies in 34 districts. These include 15 Municipal Corporations, 95 Municipalities, 260 Taluka Panchayats, and 24 District Panchayats, covering both urban and rural regions of Gujarat.
Voting commenced at 7 am, and despite the slow early turnout, voters were seen lining up at polling stations in several areas. Authorities have stated that polling will continue until 6 pm, and turnout figures are expected to rise as the day progresses.
A notable aspect of this election is the significant number of uncontested seats. Out of the original 9,992 seats, 733 have already been decided without voting. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a sweeping 724 of these seats unopposed, indicating a strong organisational presence at the grassroots level.
These elections are crucial as they will determine leadership across local governance bodies for the next five years, influencing civic administration, development projects, and public services across the state.
