The Centre is considering sending the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for closer examination amid resistance from opposition parties and Christian representatives. The move could give lawmakers more time to study the proposed changes and examine concerns surrounding the regulation of foreign funding received by NGOs and other organisations.
The proposed legislation seeks to modify provisions of the FCRA, 2010, which regulates the acceptance and utilisation of overseas contributions in India. With objections being raised over some of the proposed provisions, referring the Bill to a JPC could open the door for wider consultations before the government moves ahead with the legislation.
