Iran has responded sharply to the Republican Party’s setback in the 2026 US midterm elections, claiming that American voters have sent a clear message against war and rising living costs. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said the election outcome reflected the public’s dissatisfaction with the policies of US President Donald Trump. He stated that Iran supported the message delivered by American voters, suggesting that people had rejected the country’s approach towards war.
Qalibaf also issued a warning to Washington, saying that any action against Iran that goes against public opinion would invite a strong response. His remarks came after Democrats secured control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate, marking a major political setback for Trump’s Republican Party.
Trump, meanwhile, acknowledged that the ongoing conflict with Iran had affected Republican candidates’ performance in the elections. However, he defended his administration’s approach towards Tehran, maintaining that voters understood the importance of his actions. The election results have further intensified political tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Iran using the outcome to criticise Trump’s foreign policy.
