In a major development for India’s armed forces, the Central Government has announced a two-year extension in the service tenure of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced the decision on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

Under the revised arrangement, Agniveers who were earlier scheduled to leave the armed forces after completing their initial four-year tenure will get an opportunity to serve for another two years. The extension is expected to benefit around 75% of Agniveers who are not selected for permanent enrolment in the regular forces. The decision to continue service will depend on the individual Agniveer.

According to the announcement, personnel receiving the extension will also be eligible for enhanced remuneration. Their performance during the extended period will be assessed for consideration for permanent positions in the armed forces. The move is being seen as a significant change in the Agnipath recruitment framework, which was introduced in 2022 to bring young personnel into the Army, Navy and Air Force.
