Hanimaadhoo airport strengthens India-Maldives regional partnership

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the Hanimaadhoo International Airport, a major infrastructure project financed under India’s Line of Credit.

The airport, celebrated as a “gateway to prosperity,” is expected to transform the northern Maldives by improving tourism, trade, and regional connectivity.

This development represents a key milestone in enhancing economic growth, infrastructure, and bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

President Muizzu called the new facility a “symbol of economic transformation,” emphasising its potential to uplift tourism, fisheries, agriculture, and social development in northern atolls.

The airport is not only a transportation hub but also an instrument of balanced national growth, promoting decentralisation and bringing economic opportunities beyond the capital region.

Its impact is expected to extend across various sectors, creating long-term employment and business prospects.

Funded through India’s USD 800 million Line of Credit by EXIM Bank, the project was built by India’s JMC Projects at a cost of USD 136.6 million.

The airport reflects India’s “Neighbourhood First” and “MAHASAGAR” visions, aiming to strengthen regional cooperation and maritime connectivity.

The Indian High Commission in Malé described it as a “true vehicle for progress and prosperity,” symbolising deep-rooted ties between the two nations.

The inauguration was attended by India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, alongside senior officials from both governments.

Coinciding with the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic relations, the event underscored shared values of friendship and regional stability.

Bilateral talks held between Naidu and Maldives’ Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel reaffirmed mutual goals in enhancing connectivity, trade, and sustainable infrastructure development.

The Hanimaadhoo Airport will serve as a major driver of economic activity in northern Maldives. It is expected to boost tourism, attract investments, and create better export channels for local products.

With upgraded runways, modern terminals, and advanced facilities, the airport will enhance passenger experience and improve logistics efficiency. The initiative also supports Maldives’ broader economic diversification strategy.

This landmark project marks a new phase in India-Maldives cooperation, blending infrastructure growth with diplomatic goodwill. It reflects how regional partnerships and sustainable investments can stimulate prosperity across island economies.

Hanimaadhoo International Airport stands as a testament to India’s continued commitment to supporting Maldives’ development goals through inclusive and forward-looking collaboration.
