Despite the ban in India, TikTok has overtaken Google as the most popular website
According to Cloudflare, TikTok has surpassed Google as the most popular website of the year
According to a survey, TikTok, a famous short video-sharing app, has surpassed Google as the most popular website of the year. The viral video app receives more hits than the US-based search engine, according to a survey by IT security firm Cloudflare, writes BBC.
TikTok dethroned Google from the top spot in February, March, and June of this year, and has kept the top slot since August, according to the rankings.
Google was first in 2020, followed by TikTok, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Netflix, all of which were in the top ten.
According to the study, the Covid-19 pandemic is thought to be one of the causes for Tiktok's popularity spike, as lockdowns meant individuals were locked at home and looking for amusement.
The social network, which is owned by the Chinese company Bytedance, already has over one billion active users worldwide, and that figure is growing.
During border tensions with China, the Indian government banned the popular short-form video app TikTok in June 2020.
