The Supreme Court of India on 29th July, Wednesday disposed of the criminal case against former prime minister Manmohan Singh in the Coal Block Allocation case. A three bench led by CJI Surya Kant accepted the closure report of CBI and gave a clean chit to Manmohan Singh, nearly 2 years after his demise.
In this case ,there was an allegation of irregular allocation of Talabira-II coal block in Odisha to Hindalco industries. At that time UPA’s government was in the Centre and the Coal portfolio was held by Dr. Manmohan Singh.
In 2015, Manmohan Singh was summoned to trial courts as an accused despite the two closure reports filed by CBI stating that no prima facie evidence against him, industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and former Coal secretary P C Parekh. Later, Singh challenged this order in supreme court and SC stayed this order and prevented him from facing trials.
