Amazon has reportedly laid off around 250 employees from its Devices and Services division, with affected workers being informed through early morning emails and text messages on October 28, 2026. The layoffs have primarily affected software development roles in the division, which is responsible for products such as Kindle e-readers, Echo smart speakers and Alexa-powered devices. The sudden communication has once again raised concerns about job security in the technology sector.
According to reports, Amazon decided to eliminate these positions as part of an organisational restructuring aimed at improving efficiency and aligning its workforce with future product plans. Cherie Robinson, the division’s HR vice president, reportedly informed employees about the decision following a review of the organisational structure. The latest layoffs come after the company reportedly cut around 1,000 positions in its retail business earlier in October. However, Amazon has not directly attributed the latest job cuts to artificial intelligence (AI). The developments highlight the continuing workforce changes across the global technology industry.
