Patan on High Alert as Municipality Seals Illegal Slaughterhouses, Traders Move Gujarat High Court.
In a decisive move to address public health concerns and mounting local unrest, the Patan municipal corporation, backed by heavy police deployment, launched a major crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses operating out of residential areas on January 5, 2026.
The coordinated operation targeted more than 40 unlicensed units functioning from homes and small godowns in localities such as Kasumbivaada and Limdi Chowk, where residents had repeatedly complained of foul stench, improper waste disposal, and serious hygiene risks.
Large quantities of meat and mutton stored in unhygienic conditions were seized, and the process of sealing the illegal units is underway. Officials confirmed that none of the establishments held valid permissions from the municipal body or the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
While local traders have challenged the municipal notices in the Gujarat High Court, citing jurisdictional issues, authorities maintained that the action was necessary in the interest of public health and law and order.
Police continue to remain deployed in sensitive pockets of the city, with the civic body issuing a strict warning that any attempt to break seals or resume illegal operations will invite immediate criminal action.
