Middle East Crisis Deepens as Iran Installs New Supreme Leader and Attacks Oil Facility,Trump Warns Iran’s New Leader May Not Last Long Without US Approval
Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, according to an announcement made by Iranian state television early Monday. His elevation to the country’s highest political and religious position comes amid heightened regional tensions following the reported killing of his father in an Israeli strike on 28 February.
Mojtaba Khamenei had long been considered a strong contender to succeed his father despite never holding any elected or formal government office. The leadership transition has drawn sharp international reactions, particularly from former US President Donald Trump, who warned that Iran’s next Supreme Leader “would not last long” without his approval.
Trump also stated that he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would jointly decide when the ongoing war in the region should end and claimed he remains in constant contact with the Israeli leader regarding developments. Meanwhile, the conflict intensified as renewed Iranian attacks reportedly struck Bahrain’s key oil infrastructure, triggering a fire at the country’s only refinery operated by Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), with thick black smoke seen rising from the facility.
The late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989 after succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic who led the Iranian Revolution that overthrew Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Khamenei himself played a significant role in the revolution and later served as Iran’s president from 1981 to 1989 before becoming Supreme Leader following Khomeini’s death.
Under Iran’s system of governance based on Islamic law, the Supreme Leader must hold the religious title of Ayatollah, meaning the position is reserved for a senior cleric who is recognized as a leading religious authority. The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei marks a significant moment in Iran’s political history as the country navigates a volatile regional conflict and a sensitive leadership transition.
