From 85th to 75th: Indian Passport’s Big Leap Signals Expanding International Access.
Why the jump matters:
Greater travel freedom: Easier access reduces paperwork, costs, and waiting times for tourists, students, and business travelers.
Diplomatic momentum: Improved mobility signals stronger bilateral ties and growing international confidence in India.
Economic impact: Simplified travel can boost trade, investment, tourism exchanges, and global workforce mobility.
Competitive positioning: While Singapore continues to lead globally, India’s steady climb indicates incremental but meaningful gains in passport strength.
In a notable boost for outbound travel, the Indian passport has climbed 10 places to rank 75th in the February 2026 edition of the Henley & Partners Passport Index. The rise from 85th position reflects India’s expanding diplomatic engagement and fresh bilateral arrangements that have eased entry norms for its citizens. Indian passport holders can now access roughly 56–60 destinations without a prior physical visa, including visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and eTA options.
Recent relaxations by Malaysia, Thailand, and Iran, along with smoother transit provisions in Germany, have contributed to the upward movement.Overall, the latest ranking underscores a positive trajectory for India’s global mobility footprint, even as it continues to trail the top-tier Asian and European passports.
