Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns, Citing Health Reasons

Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has officially resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health concerns.

In a letter addressed to the President of India, Dhankhar stated his decision was made “to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice,” in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately,” the letter reads.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Dhankhar thanked the President, Prime Minister, and Members of Parliament for their support throughout his tenure.

“The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament will ever be cherished and embedded in my memory,” he noted.

Reflecting on his time in office, he remarked:

“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor.”

He concluded with a message of optimism and pride:

“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”

Dhankhar assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022.

Following his resignation, Harivansh Narayan Singh, the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, will serve as acting Chairperson until a new Vice President is elected, as outlined by the Constitution.
