In the wake of the humiliating defeats in the recently concluded assembly polls, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, on Tuesday, directed the state units of the party in five states—Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur—to resign.

The move comes two days after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) discussed the reasons for the party's poor performance in the elections.

During the meeting, the party leaders had urged the Congress chief to to initiate necessary changes in the organisation in order to strengthen the party.

After the directive from Sonia, Uttarakhand Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal resigned from the post, taking moral responsibility for the defeat of his party in the state.
