Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the year-long commemoration of 150 years of the National Song “Vande Mataram” in New Delhi.
The Prime Minister also released a Commemorative Stamp and Coin on the occasion.
He also launched the portal – “vandemataram150.in”, where citizens can upload their videos of singing the national song and earn a certificate.
Addressing the event at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the national capital, the Prime Minister said that Vande Mataram is a mantra, an energy, a dream and a resolution.
He hailed it as a devotion and adoration of Mother India, which takes one back to history, fills the present with self-confidence, and instils renewed courage for the future that any resolve can be fulfilled and there is no goal that cannot be achieved.
He lauded the collective singing of Vande Mataram as an experience beyond expression which stirs the heart.
PM Modi added that Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay started a clarion call for an Independent, United and Prosperous India through the song.
Prime Minister Modi said Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore once said that Bankim Chandra’s ‘Anandmath’ is not just a novel.
It is a dream of an independent India. Every word written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay had a deep meaning. The Prime Minister asserted that the Vande Mataram song is relevant in every era.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also participated in the event.
Addressing the gathering,Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that Vande Mataram has captured the spirit of rebellion in the hearts of the freedom fighters who chanted the song till their last breath.
The Minister noted that it has since then instilled and encouraged patriotism amongst Indians long after independence.
He highlighted that Vande Mataram continues to stay relevant, serving as the mantra of ‘ek bharat sreshta bharat’ and capturing the power of 140 crore Indians.
The celebrations feature mass singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” across public places, with enthusiastic participation from people of all sections of society.
Vande Mataram was written by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay on Akshaya Navami, November 7 in 1875.
It was first published in the literary journal Bangadarshan as part of his novel Anandamath.
Invoking the Motherland as a symbol of strength, prosperity, and divinity, the song became an enduring emblem of India’s unity and national pride.
