Among the Tenets of Philosophy adopted by Indian Railways, "Hungry for Cargo" is one of the main priorities for Western Railway and various efforts initiated with this motto has begun yielding positive results. Continuing with this mission, Western Railway has successfully crossed the milestone of Rs. 200 Cr. in Parcel Revenue in the current financial year on 22nd December, 2021.

Moving forward with the same motivation, Western Railway also has crossed the milestone of Rs. 10,000 Cr in originating revenue on 14th December, 2021.

According to a press release issued by Sumit Thakur – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the Business Development Units (BDUs) are being closely monitored which has resulted in improvement in parcel traffic as well as acquiring more freight opportunities in terms of new traffic. During the period from 1st April to 22nd December, 2021, the overall parcel revenue generated is Rs. 201.09 Cr. in comparison to Rs. 115.56 Cr in the corresponding period of last year, which is 74% higher.

Thakur further stated that during the period from 1st April to 22nd December, 2021, Western Railway has transported commodities weighing more than 2.28 lakh tonnes through its 587 time tabled parcel special trains, which included agricultural produce, medicines, medical equipment, fish, milk etc. The revenue generated through this transportation, has been approx Rs. 81.73 crore. 133 Milk Special trains have been run by WR, with a load of more than 93,500 tonnes and 100% utilization of the wagons. Similarly, 148 COVID-19 special parcel trains with a load of approx. 29,300 tonnes were also run to transport essential commodities.

In addition to this, 169 indented rakes carrying more than 68,600 tonnes were also run with 100% utilization. To help the farmers find new markets for their produce and also for its economical and fast transportation, 137 Kisan Rails with load of more than 37,000 tonnes have also been run during this period from various Divisions. During the period from 1st April to 22nd December, 2021 total 27,853 rakes of goods trains have been run by WR and carried 62.09 million tonnes of essential commodities. 59,767 freight trains were interchanged with other zonal railways, in which 29,896 trains were handed over and 29,871 trains were taken over at different interchange points.

Business Development Units (BDUs) are in constant contact with the existing and probable freight customers to encourage them to transport their goods through railways with the incentives introduced by the Railway Board for quick, reliable, economical & bulk transportation of their goods.
