The chief electoral officer (CEO) of Gujarat has received complaints that some of the employees of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) have been actively campaigning for a political party for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Sources said that the CEO has directed the Ahmedabad district collector to investigate these complaints and take appropriate action if the employees are found to have erred.

According to rules, employees of govt and grant-in-aid educational institutions are barred from joining political parties and campaigning for them during elections.

Sources said the complaint letters state the employees who have been actively campaigning for candidates of a political party in different constituencies are govt employees and draw their salaries from the govt coffers.

The GTU is the state’s largest public university in terms of number of institutes affiliated with it and in the number of students.
