Centre assures safe potable tap water by 2022 in every household of North Western States

The Centre has assured safe potable tap water by next year in every household of North Western States and Union Territories of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Ministry of Jal Shakti has said that the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission will be expedited in these States and UTs and every rural household will be provided with tap water connections by the end of 2022.

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has approved Central allocation of over eight thousand 200 crore rupees in the current financial year for expediting the work in these States & UTs. The allocation is more than four times of the allocation given to these States and UTs in the last financial year.

Mr. Shekhawat has also assured full assistance to these States and UTs for making provision of tap water supply in every rural home. Assured supply of potable tap water in every home will improve the lives of more than five crore people living in villages in this region, especially women and girls.

Three states in North-Western India, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab have successfully provided tap water connections to all schools and Anganwadi Centres.

Jammu & Kashmir has so far been able to extend the coverage to 90 per cent of its schools and Anganwadis whereas Ladakh has successfully extended the coverage to around 50 per cent.
