The three-day monsoon session of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly begins in Gandhinagar today, Wednesday, following the state Budget Session held in March. On the first day, the House will be adjourned after Question Hour following a condolence resolution for late MLA Yogesh Patel, a member of the 15th Legislative Assembly. The remaining two days, Thursday and Friday, will focus on discussions on around eight bills, including two proposed new laws and amendments to 11 existing laws. MLAs will also get one hour of Question Hour each day to raise issues related to public concerns, government functioning and alleged irregularities. Dediapada MLA Chaitar Vasava, who has been in jail for around three months, has also been granted seven days’ parole by the High Court to attend the Assembly session.
Meanwhile, the Congress has prepared a strategy to corner the state government over the situation caused by inadequate rainfall across Gujarat. As the Assembly session begins, the opposition has organised a large rally at Satyagrah Chhavani in Gandhinagar, demanding that districts affected by the poor rainfall be declared drought-hit at the earliest. Congress leaders are expected to raise issues related to rainfall, agricultural distress and the government’s response during the session. The government is also expected to introduce bills relating to rent-related matters and animal feed, among other legislative proposals, during the two days of discussion.
