Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to visit India next month to attend the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. Iran officially confirmed his visit on Friday.
India is holding the BRICS chairmanship this year, with the summit bringing together leaders of the grouping’s member countries.
Important Visit Amid West Asia Tensions
Pezeshkian’s visit comes amid continuing tensions in West Asia and is expected to provide an opportunity for India and Iran to discuss bilateral ties as well as regional developments. India has consistently called for de-escalation in West Asia and advocated dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts.
Iran became a full member of BRICS in 2024 and has since sought to use the platform to strengthen economic and political cooperation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited India in June to attend a BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, where he said India could play an important role in reducing tensions in West Asia and that Iran would welcome any constructive role by New Delhi.
Bilateral Talks and Chabahar Port
Pezeshkian had earlier met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional issues, with PM Modi highlighting the importance of the Chabahar Port and greater economic cooperation between the two countries.
Focus on Regional Peace and Connectivity
Diplomatic engagement between India and Iran has increased in recent months. In July, the two countries’ top leaders held a phone conversation focusing on the situation in West Asia and regional peace. The discussion stressed the importance of resolving disputes through diplomacy and maintaining trade and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Pezeshkian’s upcoming visit is therefore expected to be significant not only for India-Iran relations but also for Iran’s growing engagement with the BRICS platform, regional diplomacy and economic connectivity.
