Albania is witnessing growing anti-government protests, known as the “Flamingo Revolution,” with young people demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Demonstrators have raised concerns over alleged corruption, unemployment, rising education costs and limited opportunities for the country’s youth.
The movement initially gained attention through environmental protests against luxury tourism projects in sensitive coastal areas but later expanded into a broader campaign against the political establishment. Young protesters have largely coordinated demonstrations through social media, expressing distrust towards both the ruling party and traditional opposition groups.
The protests have reportedly escalated into clashes with police, who used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. According to Al Jazeera’s October 20 report, at least 167 people had been arrested amid the unrest, increasing pressure on Rama’s government.
