Air travel is becoming more expensive this Diwali, with passengers having to pay significantly higher prices to travel to their hometowns. Rising festive demand, higher aviation fuel costs and limited flight availability on several routes are putting upward pressure on airfares across India.According to recent reports, some domestic routes have witnessed fare increases of up to 70% compared with last year. A survey by LocalCircles also found that 72% of air travellers said they were paying more to travel home this festive season than they did in 2025.
Why Are Flight Tickets Becoming Expensive?
One of the main reasons behind the price increase is the sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which forms a significant part of an airline’s operating expenses. Higher fuel costs are putting additional pressure on airlines, which may pass some of the increase on to passengers.Another major factor is the growing demand for flights during Diwali and Chhath Puja. Thousands of people living in major cities travel to their hometowns during the festive period, increasing demand for tickets on popular routes. At the same time, reduced seat capacity on some routes has further contributed to higher fares.
Tickets on Some Routes Cost Much More
The price difference is particularly noticeable on routes connecting major cities with destinations such as Patna and Varanasi. For example, one-way fares from Mumbai to Patna for peak festive dates have crossed ₹25,000 in some listings. Flights from Bengaluru to Patna have also been listed at more than ₹26,000 for certain dates.Fares on other busy routes, including Bengaluru–Delhi and Mumbai–Delhi, have also increased compared with typical prices. However, actual ticket prices depend on the travel date, airline, availability and booking time.
Government Not Planning to Cap Airfares
The government has indicated that it does not plan to impose a fixed ceiling on airfares during the festive season. However, the Civil Aviation Ministry has said it will engage with airlines and encourage them to keep ticket prices reasonable. The sharp rise in fares has also brought renewed attention to the need for greater transparency in airline pricing and protection for passengers during periods of high demand.
How Can Passengers Save Money?
Travellers can compare prices across airlines, consider flying on less busy dates and book tickets as early as possible when their travel plans are confirmed. Checking alternative airports and connecting flights may also help reduce costs. With Diwali approaching, passengers planning to travel by air may need to prepare for higher expenses this year, particularly on routes with limited seats and strong festive demand.
