    Serving the humanity and countrymen with compassion, Western Railway has put its best foot forward gearing up its machinery and enabling supply/distribution of meals to the poor and needy persons during lockdown period.  WR is getting these meals prepared through various agencies like IRCTC, NGOs, Local Swayamsevi Sansthas, Catering / Handling Contractors, Religious Organizations, Railway Staff Associations and other good Samaritans.
            
    According to  press release, issued by WR CPRO Ravinder Bhakar, the base kitchens of IRCTC at Mumbai Central and Ahmedabad were opened and all possible assistance like staff assistance, electrical / water supply for preparation of meals was extended to them by WR. The Commercial officers and supervisors in divisions worked all out connecting with various philanthropic and social organizations / individuals motivating them to provide cooked and ready to eat meals with their own resources.

    The Commercial staff was motivated to facilitate distribution with adequate protection to ensure it lands in the hands of the ones who needed them the most in such critical times. In  order to distribute the meals, local authorities were contacted by divisions to check the requirement for ferrying meals to various locations. The distribution is being done by brave Railway Staff like Ticket Checkers, Booking Clerks, Commercial Inspectors. Daily, roughly 50 staff of various divisions readily shoulder the responsibility along with other 50-60 volunteers from different NGOs in these difficult times.

    All divisions of WRly are working hand in hand with state & local Authorities for orderly & proper distribution of meals to the needy in various localities decided mutually, along with contractual staff stranded at various locations, Goods shed labourers & other staff. Till 17th April, 2020, WR’s Commercial Deptt. has arranged 1,12,615 meals in coordination with various NGOs & Staff. IRCTC’s  base kithen has also contributed another 1,29,887 meals through its base  kitchen at Mumbai Central & Ahmedabad during this period. Having started with 2299 meals on the first day on 29th March, 2020, WR is now serving 14744 meals a day as on 17th April, 2020.
        
    The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the catering arm of the Indian Railways network, is supplying free meals at railway stations. 13 of  IRCTC’s base kitchens, spread across the country, have become the nodal points for food distribution. Railway officials are observing social distancing and the needy people are being to follow the same. IRCTC’s  Mumbai Central Base kitchen has supplied 1,20,940 and Ahmedabad base kitchen has supplied 1,07,325  meals till now. 

    In addition, 3000 food packets were distributed by Ahmedabad division on 18th April, 2020 and 6470 meals were distributed by Mumbai Division. Vadodara division has supplied 1550 food packets in Vadodara city through Akshaya Patra Foundation. 125 Meals (MASALA KHICHDI) were given to labourers of Nadiad Goods shed.

    Similarly, 250 food packets were distributed by Bhavnagar division with the help of  NGOs at Sihor and Gondal. 374 meals packets were distributed by Rajkot division. Ratlam division has distributed 345  food packets. As per guidance issued by Ministry of AYUSH, to enhance the body’s natural defence system (immunity), Rajkot Rly administration has distributed 400 Homeopathic medicine bottles to Rly employees and officers of  Kothi compound Rly colony.  35 Home made cloth masks were distributed at Godhra station. Hand free liquid soap dispenser and valve operated water dispensing arrangements are  made and installed at Wagon Repair Depot of Vadodara yard.
