Ukraine begins drafting reservists
New Update

Ukraine's armed forces announced on Wednesday the country had started drafting reservists as tension with Russia continues.

Reuters reported that drafting of reservists in the age group of 18 to 60 had commenced. The reservists would have to serve a maximum period of one year.

On Tuesday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he would introduce conscription of reservists, but ruled out a general mobilisation.

"There is no need for general mobilisation today. We need to promptly replenish the Ukrainian army and other formations," Zelensky was quoted as saying by Reuters.

"We must increase the readiness of the Ukrainian army for all possible changes in the operational environment. We are talking exclusively about citizens assigned to the operational reserve..." Zelensky was quoted as saying by Financial Times.

According to estimates, Ukraine has around 220,000-250,000 troops on active duty, while its reserve forces have approximately 900,000 personnel. The reserves consist of people who have received military training in the past five years.
