A powerful earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale has struck America, causing widespread panic among residents. Although no reports of casualties or property damage have been received so far, a tsunami alert has been issued in the affected region.

According to reports, the tremors were felt in the Drake Passage area, a deep and wide oceanic passage connecting the southwestern Atlantic Ocean with the southeastern Pacific Ocean.

As per data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.8 kilometers.

To understand the cause, it is important to note that the Earth’s crust is divided into seven major tectonic plates. These plates are constantly moving. When they collide, slide past one another, move apart, or one plate subducts beneath another, the energy released causes the ground to shake—this is what we call an earthquake.

Earthquake magnitude is measured using the Richter Scale, also known as the Richter Magnitude Scale.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urge residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories.
