Pakistan spends roughly 2.9 percent of its GDP on education. According to The Express Tribune, it has the lowest literacy percentage in the South and Asia as a whole.

The literacy rate in the country is 62.3 percent, with a female literacy rate of 51.7 percent.

People with insufficient literacy skills are ill-prepared for the labour market, higher schooling, and on-the-job training, according to the Pakistani publication.

Islamabad has also failed to make the necessary investments in innovation, including as research and development, education, strong infrastructure, and institution-supporting innovative activities, to improve the country's educational system.

The rating is based on 82 different indicators organised into seven pillars. Pakistan is ranked 117th in terms of human capital and research.

The top three countries in terms of innovation are Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States. Vietnam is ranked 44th among Asian countries, India is 46th, and Iran is 60th. According to The Express Tribune, India is placed second among lower-middle-income economies and first in Central and South Asia. People with insufficient literacy skills are ill-prepared for the labour market, higher schooling, and on-the-job training, according to the Pakistani publication.
