A major tragedy has occurred in West Africa, where at least 70 people have lost their lives after a boat capsized. The Gambian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident, stating that the boat, carrying migrants along the West African coastline, overturned, resulting in the deaths of at least 70 individuals. The boat had around 150 passengers on board, with 16 survivors rescued. Efforts are underway to locate the others.
The vessel, which had departed from The Gambia, sank off the coast of Mauritania on Wednesday. The Atlantic migration route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is one of the deadliest in the world, and such maritime tragedies are not uncommon along this path.
