There are two major types of lions — African lions and Asiatic lions. The Asiatic lion’s only remaining wild population is found in Gir, Gujarat, making it the last natural stronghold of this rare species.
India has a unique place in global lion conservation because the world’s only wild population of Asiatic lions survives in India, primarily across Gujarat’s Greater Gir landscape. The latest official estimate puts India’s Asiatic lion population at 891 in 2025, up from 674 in 2020 — a 32% increase in five years.

6.They hunt during storms-Lions are clever hunters, choosing to hunt at night or during storms where their prey is unlikely to see or hear them.
