Railways to go the airport way with baggage weight regulations

Now, the Railway Board has identified key stations where permissible weight limits will be strictly imposed.

Under the rules, First AC passengers can carry up to 70 kg of luggage free of cost, while the limit is 50 kg for AC two-tier, 40 kg for AC three-tier and sleeper class, and 35 kg for general class. Oversized bags that block boarding space will attract penalties.

The Railways clarified in a statement: “Luggage rules already exist. Officers have been instructed to ensure proper enforcement, and standard instructions are available.”

Passengers carrying scooters, cycles, or other large items will not be eligible for free allowance. The move is aimed at easing congestion, ensuring smoother onboarding, and maintaining safety in trains.
