In a significant move to ease travel for millions of commuters, Indian Railways has launched a new initiative allowing passengers to travel without prior reservations in unreserved coaches on selected intercity and express trains.

The goal of this initiative is to improve accessibility, provide cost-effective options, and offer greater flexibility to passengers, especially during peak travel periods when securing confirmed tickets is often a challenge.

This initiative will initially be available on key routes such as Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Jaipur, Hyderabad–Vijayawada, Lucknow–Varanasi, and Kolkata–Patna—some of the most crowded corridors in India.

The introduction of unreserved travel on these popular routes is expected to cater to daily commuters and those looking for spontaneous travel options while reducing congestion on long-distance reserved coaches.

The unreserved travel scheme will be applicable to a limited number of trains, with specific departures mentioned for each route.

For example, the Mumbai–Pune Superfast train will depart at 7:30 AM, the Hyderabad–Vijayawada Express at 7:30 AM, and the Delhi–Jaipur Express at 6:00 AM, among others.

These routes, among the busiest in India, will now offer affordable, unreserved travel options, providing greater flexibility for passengers who find themselves unable to secure a reservation during peak travel hours.

Fares for these unreserved routes will be relatively low, making them especially appealing to daily commuters.

For instance, the Mumbai–Pune route will charge as low as Rs 120, and the Delhi–Jaipur route will offer fares around Rs 150 for general compartments. 

This affordability is likely to attract working professionals, students, and small-scale traders who rely on budget-friendly transport options.

In addition to the previously mentioned routes, other major corridors like Ahmedabad–Surat, Patna–Gaya, Jaipur–Ajmer, Chennai–Bengaluru, and Bhopal–Indore will also be included in the scheme.

This new unreserved travel initiative is designed to make short-distance travel more convenient, particularly between neighbouring cities.

For many passengers, securing a reserved seat can be challenging during peak seasons, and the ability to travel without reservation opens up new possibilities for spontaneous trips.
