Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the idea of a worldwide grid to transmit clean energy anywhere, anytime will offer a solution to the problem of harnessing solar energy.

World's first partnership for interconnected solar grid, known as the Green Grids Initiative - One Sun, One World, One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG)—was launched on Tuesday at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.

Speaking at the event, the PM pointed out that the "use of fossil fuels made some countries prosperous, but it made the Earth and environment poor. The race for fossil fuels also created geo-political tensions."

"Solar energy is totally clean and sustainable. Challenge is that this energy is only available during daytime and dependent is on the weather. 'One Sun, One World and One Grid' is solution to this problem. Through a worldwide grid, clean energy can be transmitted to anywhere and anytime," the PM said.

"'One Sun, One World, One Grid' will not only reduce storage needs but also enhance viability of solar projects. This creative initiative will reduce carbon footprints and energy cost, and open a new avenue for cooperation between different countries and regions."

The PM said, "I am hopeful that a common and strong global grid can be developed through cooperation between 'One Sun, One World, One Grid' and 'Green Grid' initiatives. Indian space agency, ISRO, is going to provide a solar calculator application to the world," adding, "Through this calculator, solar power potential of any place in the world can be calculated based on satellite data. This application will be useful in deciding the location of solar projects and will strengthen 'One Sun, One World, One Grid' initiative."
