Google has announced the rollout of a new AI-driven feature, Gmail Q&A, which is now available for Android users who subscribe to the Gemini service.
This update marks a major shift in how Gmail users interact with their email. The new feature brings more advanced AI-assisted functionalities within the Gmail app.
The Gmail Q&A feature leverages Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, allowing users to engage directly with the AI to manage their email inbox.
With this feature, you can ask Gemini questions about your inbox or to do things like find specific details in your emails, show you unread messages, view messages from a specific sender, or summarize emails about a topic in your inbox.
In practice, users will find a new black star icon representing Gemini positioned next to the existing search bar in the Gmail app.
This addition reflects Google’s broader strategy to shift from traditional search functionalities to AI chat interactions.
To activate Gmail Q&A on Android, administrators must ensure that smart features and personalisation settings are enabled.
These settings can be adjusted through the Admin console, where admins can turn on default personalisation for all users.
For individual users, the new feature is accessible via the black Gemini star icon located at the top right of the Gmail app or through the “summarise this email” chip.
Initially, Gmail Q&A will help users search for information within their email inbox. Future updates are expected to extend this functionality to include Google Drive files.
The rollout of Gmail Q&A is being happening gradually across both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.
Users can expect to see the new feature become fully visible within next 15 days.
The Gmail Q&A feature is available to Google Workspace customers with specific add-ons, including Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium.
The feature is currently coming to Android users with plans to bring to iOS users soon.
