Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday, said the increase in demand for electric vehicles in India suggests that it is the beginning of a silent revolution.

Modi was speaking at a programme organised at Mahatma Mandir convention centre in Gandhinagar of Gujarat to mark the 40 years of collaboration between Suzuki Motor Corporation and Maruti.

Modi said electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers make no noise. "The silence of electric vehicles is bringing a new silent revolution in the country," he said.

The PM said India-Japan relations reached new heights in the last eight years. The relationship has grown beyond diplomacy, he added.

Modi said Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is carrying forward the efforts of late Shinzo Abe to bring the two countries closer. Gujarat, he said, fondly remembers the time Abe spent in the state during his visit.

He pointed out that the Gujarat-Maharashtra bullet train to Rudraksh Centre in Varanasi and many such developmental projects are examples of India-Japan friendship.

Modi said in COP-26, India announced that by 2030 it will obtain 50 per cent of its electrical capacity from non-fossil sources. By 2070, India has targeted "Net Zero," he added.

He recalled how Suzuki came to Gujarat to set up a manufacturing unit 13 years ago. Both Gujarat and Suzuki have kept their words, he said, assuring full support of the Central and Gujarat government in Suzuki's endeavours.

The PM also laid the foundation for a new EV plant on the occasion.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Haryana Chief Minister Manoharlal Khattar also attended the programme.
