The 18th BRICS Summit is being held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with India hosting the major international gathering at Bharat Mandapam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is welcoming leaders from several BRICS countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The summit is being held under India’s 2026 BRICS chairship with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Ahead of the summit, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders discussed cooperation in trade, defence, energy, space, infrastructure and other areas. They also spoke about global conflicts and their impact on maritime trade and the safety of Indian sailors. Putin invited PM Modi to Russia for the next India-Russia Annual Summit, and Modi accepted the invitation.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has also arrived in New Delhi for the BRICS Summit and is expected to meet PM Modi. The meeting is being closely watched because India and China are trying to improve relations after tensions along their border. The BRICS Summit is also taking place amid major global issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war, conflicts in West Asia and growing tensions involving the US and China.
The summit has also led to tight security and traffic restrictions in Delhi. Around 30,000 security personnel have been deployed across important locations, including the airport, hotels and Bharat Mandapam. Traffic authorities have announced diversions on key routes to ensure the smooth movement of visiting leaders and their convoys.
