The Mothers Own Milk (Mom) will be started from 8th November
SSG hospital the biggest hospital in Central Gujarat is now equipped
with human milk bank. The Mothers Own Milk (Mom) will be started from 8th
November and will be boon for the unhealthy newly born babies. The bank is
second after Kashiba Children hospital in Karelibaug area of the city.
Paediatric head of SSG and Mom incharge Dr. Sheela Iyer said
the bank is equipped with ultra modern technology and store the healthy donors
milk after pasteurisation. The milk can be used upto six months and will be
beneficial for the newly born babies.
She further said mothers milk is above all and give strength
to the baby to fight diseases and increase growth. It works like a shield in
case of infection and NEC like diseases for the baby. It often happens that
some mothers are unable to feed babies with their own milk and in such case the
human milk bank comes to the rescue.
Dr Iyer said healthy mothers can donate milk in the bank and
for that a necessary test will be done to check for any diseases and then they
will allow them to donate. The bank is also ready to provide milk to other
hospitals in case they collect extra stock. There will no charge for it and
government is also pushing for such banks in every cities.
The human milk bank will be operational from 8th November on
third floor of Rukmani Chainani building inside the SSG hospital. The bank will
be run by nursing incharge Bini Chaudhary and team of technicians. Surat
Municipality also runs a mothers milk bank and government is pushing for such
banks in every cities in coming days.
