India has officially presented its proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, marking a major step in its campaign to bring the prestigious event back to the country. The proposal was submitted on Tuesday to the Evaluation Committee of Commonwealth Sport by a high-level Indian delegation comprising representatives from the Indian Olympic Association, central and state governments.

The Indian delegation was led by Harsh Sanghavi, Minister of Sports, Government of Gujarat, and PT Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) of India.

Key officials involved in the presentation included:

  • Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary, Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India.
  • Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary, Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat.
  • Banchha Nidhi Pani, Commissioner, Amdavad Municipal Corporation.
  • Raghuram Iyer, CEO, Commonwealth Games Association of India.
  • Lt Gen Harpal Singh, Executive Board Member, CGA India.
  • Ajay Narang, Executive Assistant to the President, CGA India.

The 2030 edition holds special significance as it marks the Centenary of the Commonwealth Sport Movement. India’s bid positions Ahmedabad as the host city for this milestone edition, with a compact Games footprint that includes world-class venues, efficient transport systems, and quality accommodation.

The proposal aligns with the Games Reset principles, emphasizing affordability, inclusivity, flexibility, and sustainability. It also outlines commitments to integrating para-sports, promoting gender equity, protecting human rights, and building a legacy framework that benefits athletes, communities, and the broader Commonwealth long after the Games conclude.

Ahmedabad’s strong track record in hosting major events—such as the ICC Cricket World Cup, Indian Premier League, and the 2022 National Games—bolsters India’s case. The city is also set to host future international sporting events, including:

Asian Aquatics 2025

  • Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026
  • World Police and Fire Games 2029

Speaking on the occasion, Harsh Sanghavi stated, “Hosting the Centenary Commonwealth Games will be a proud milestone, not just for Gujarat but for India. We see these Games as a catalyst — to inspire our youth, accelerate our journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047, and strengthen the Commonwealth Movement for the next 100 years.”

PT Usha added, “India’s bid is not just about capability, but about values. Ahmedabad is ready to pick up the baton from Glasgow 2026 and act as a springboard to the 2034 Games, ensuring the Centenary edition honours the past while shaping the future of Commonwealth Sport.”

India’s proposal is backed by strong coordination between the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, and the Commonwealth Games Association of India, underlining the country’s intent to deliver a compact, sustainable, inclusive, and impactful edition of the Commonwealth Games.
