The gynecology and obstetrics department of Sayaji Hospital in Vadodara has done and still doing a great job of providing necessary treatment and safe delivery to pregnant women who have contracted covid in 2020. It is to be noted that at the time when covid positive cases were being registered in Vadodara, the challenge of treating pregnant women who were covid positive arose as pregnant women were there in the list of first nine cases in city.

The head of the gynecology and obstetrics department of Sayaji Hospital, Dr. Ashish Gokhale said that as a precautionary measure, since April last year, they have been able to identify corona-positive pregnant women, they started a special maternity ward (labor room), operating room (operation theater), intensive care unit (ICU) and 6 bed stabilization at Rukmani Chainani Prasuti Gruh. And for the subsequent treatment, there are additional arrangements in the Covid building, including the resident doctor of the gynecology department. The average covid positive pregnant woman is treated in the hospital for 10 to 12 days or as needed. He said the second wave has seen an increase in the number of corona positive pregnancies compared to the first wave of covid. Such women from other cities and districts are brought to Vadodara for treatment.

This completely different arrangement for corona positive pregnancies includes natural delivery, caesarean section, ectopic pregnancy, uterine rupture, abdominal dissection surgery, prenatal treatment required during pregnancy, abortion and delivery in another city hospital or hospital in other cities and necessary treatment is being given in cases brought here for treatment when the pregnancy is positive.

While other treatments including maternity of corona free pregnant women are being done under permanent regular facility. Thus, non-corona and corona positive pregnant women are getting necessary treatment under a completely different system in the gynecology department.

From March to December 2020, a total of 114 covid-infected women have been provided with health services, including natural births of 18 pregnant women suffering from covid, Caesarean section of 45, emergency surgery of 6 and other treatments of 45. From January to May 15, 2021, a total of 144 pregnant women, including 32 caesareans, have been given along with natural services for 40 Corona-positive women, following the protocol. Thus far, the required health care of a total of 258 crore positive pregnant women in both the years has been taken up under this separate arrangement.

While in the permanent department in both the years, together a total of 8464 pregnant women have been provided the required health care services including 5321 natural births of corona free pregnant women and 2963 Caesarean section.

Dedicated resident doctors, nursing staff, support staff have all maintained the tradition of noble service in the gynecology and obstetrics department of Sayaji Hospital during the Corona period amidst challenges.
