In a heart-wrenching tragedy early Saturday, the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express derailed after colliding with a herd of elephants in Assam’s Hojai district, killing eight majestic creatures and leaving one severely injured. 

 The accident occurred around 2:17 AM near the Changjurai area, sending shockwaves across the region and raising serious concerns over the safety of wildlife along railway tracks in the Northeast. At least five coaches of the premium Rajdhani Express were derailed, causing major disruption to rail traffic, with trains on the Jamunamukh–Kampur section being diverted through alternative routes as restoration work continues.

Miraculously, no human casualties were reported, but the devastating loss of these elephants has left conservationists and local communities in mourning. The Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, a crucial link connecting Sairang near Aizawl in Mizoram to Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi, highlights the growing challenge of balancing development and wildlife protection in ecologically sensitive regions.

Forest and railway authorities have vowed to review safety measures, but this tragic incident once again underscores the urgent need for comprehensive wildlife corridors and early-warning systems to prevent such catastrophic collisions in the future.
