Outrage in Karnataka After Newlywed Dalit Couple Barred from Temple; Accused Arrested for Caste-Based Abuse
A shocking incident of caste-based discrimination occurred in Karnataka, where a newlywed Dalit couple was allegedly denied entry into a local temple, drawing widespread condemnation. The couple, who had recently completed their marriage rituals, went to the temple to offer prayers when they were stopped by a local man. Eyewitnesses said the accused refused to allow them inside and reportedly told the couple that they “should worship at home,” humiliating them in front of other devotees. The incident left the couple shaken and upset, forcing them to leave without performing their religious rites.
Following the complaint lodged by the couple, police registered a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and initiated an immediate investigation. Officers said they have taken statements from the victim, their family, and witnesses, and are examining CCTV footage from the temple premises to identify any accomplices. The accused has been arrested, and the police have assured the public that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of discrimination or harassment.
Social activists and local leaders condemned the act, calling it a blatant violation of constitutional rights and a reminder that caste-based prejudice still exists in society. Several community organizations have demanded stronger measures to ensure that people from marginalized communities are able to practice their faith without fear of harassment. The temple management has stated that they will cooperate fully with authorities during the investigation and reaffirmed that no one should be denied entry based on caste.
The incident has reignited debate over caste discrimination in religious spaces in Karnataka, especially against newly married couples, and has sparked calls for increased awareness, sensitization programs, and legal enforcement to prevent such occurrences in the future. Meanwhile, the couple continues to receive support from local authorities and community members as the investigation proceeds.
