Rajpal Yadav Remains in Rs.9-Crore Debt Crisis, Serving Six-Month Sentence Despite Industry Support.

As of February 2026, actor-comedian Rajpal Yadav continues to face a severe financial and legal setback, currently serving a six-month sentence at Tihar Jail after surrendering on February 5. The imprisonment stems from a long-pending cheque-bounce case linked to a loan taken over 15 years ago.

According to court records, Yadav’s total outstanding liability stands at approximately Rs.9 crore. The case traces back to 2010, when he borrowed ₹5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The film’s commercial failure left him unable to repay the loan on time, and over the years, accumulated interest and penalties nearly doubled the amount owed.

In recent months, the actor attempted partial settlements. In October 2025, he submitted two demand drafts totaling Rs.75 lakh. Earlier, he had deposited Rs.40 lakh toward the dues. However, the Delhi High Court observed that these payments were insufficient compared to the total liability. The court had reportedly directed payment of Rs1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him, deadlines that were repeatedly missed.

Despite the legal setback, several prominent figures from the entertainment industry have stepped in to offer support. Music entrepreneur Rao Inderjeet Singh of Gem Tunes has pledged Rs.1.11 crore and indicated he would arrange the remaining amount if the family fails to do so, aiming to secure Yadav’s release before Maha Shivratri. Actor Sonu Sood has also extended professional support by offering him a role in an upcoming film along with a signing amount to help him recover financially. Reports suggest that Salman Khan, Gurmeet Choudhary, and KRK have also expressed willingness to assist.

However, on February 4, 2026, the Delhi High Court rejected Yadav’s final plea seeking a one-week extension to arrange funds, stating that repeated leniency could not continue irrespective of his celebrity status. He surrendered the next day. His manager has confirmed that a bail hearing is expected soon, and there is optimism that fresh financial backing from industry supporters may help him secure relief.

While support from Bollywood has gathered momentum, the actor’s legal battle underscores the serious financial consequences of long-standing loan disputes and the limits of judicial flexibility in cheque-bounce cases.
