Parliament to Hold Air Pollution Discussion After Rahul Gandhi’s Appeal; LoP Stresses ‘No Blame Game’

In a significant display of political consensus on a pressing national crisis, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, successfully called for an urgent, non-partisan parliamentary discussion regarding the severe air pollution plaguing India's major cities, a proposal promptly accepted by the government. During the Zero Hour proceedings, Gandhi framed the crisis not as a political issue but as a devastating public health emergency, underscoring how the toxic air is actively jeopardizing the future of millions of children and seriously compromising the health of the elderly.

He forcefully argued that the debate must be pivoted away from the counterproductive "blame game" and instead focus exclusively on a cooperative, unified approach to finding effective and sustainable remedies, stressing that this is a challenge demanding national solidarity rather than ideological conflict.

To this end, the LoP implored the government, specifically appealing to the Prime Minister, to commit to developing a methodical, systematic, and long-term action plan for each affected city, outlining a strategy that spans the next five to ten years, and he pledged the opposition's unreserved cooperation and support in formulating this comprehensive strategy.

Responding to the LoP's appeal, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju acknowledged the gravity of the situation and confirmed the government's readiness to engage in a constructive debate, assuring the House that they are prepared to seek solutions and would seriously consider suggestions put forth by all members, with the necessary time for the discussion slated to be allocated by the Lok Sabha's Business Advisory Committee, signaling a rare and crucial step toward a unified legislative response to the environmental disaster.
