Security Tightened Across Mohali as Email Alleges Polonium Attack on Punjab CM; Hoax Angle Under Cyber Probe

Punjab went on high alert on February 17, 2026, after 16 schools and Fortis Hospital Mohali received a chilling bomb threat email claiming that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had been “infected with polonium” and warning he would meet the fate of former CM Beant Singh.

The email, allegedly sent by the “Khalistan National Army” and listing names like Engineer Gurnakh Singh and Dr. Gurmirvir Singh, threatened to blow up schools and the hospital at 11 AM and demanded Mohali schools be kept closed, citing revenge for the Khalistan referendum. Gyan Jyoti School in Phase-2 evacuated its entire campus in 10 minutes, while CBSE board exams had already begun, adding chaos for students and parents.

Security agencies swung into action immediately: roads to Fortis Hospital were sealed, five anti-sabotage teams were deployed, police conducted thorough searches of schools and hospital premises, and the CM’s security detail restricted movement inside the hospital.

Hospital sources confirmed that Mann’s condition remains stable. Authorities also noted a pattern: similar emails targeting schools and government offices in Mohali, Chandigarh, and Punjab over the past two months were traced partly to US IP addresses and Bangladeshi recovery emails, and so far all have proven to be hoaxes with no explosives found.

While cybercrime units trace the origin of this latest threat, Punjab’s security apparatus remains on maximum alert, underscoring both the audacity of the threat and the continuing risks posed by such organized intimidation campaigns.
