Narrow Escape in Vadodara: Paper Pin and Coin Lodged in Airways of Two Children, Doctors Act Just in Time
In a series of alarming medical emergencies in Vadodara, ENT surgeons at SSG Hospital and GMERS Gotri have saved multiple young children who accidentally inhaled or swallowed dangerous objects such as paper pins, coins and even an LED bulb, underscoring how quickly routine moments can turn life-threatening.
In one critical case, a young girl inhaled a sharp paper pin that became lodged in her airway dangerously close to the heart, forcing doctors to perform a high-risk rigid bronchoscope and carefully extract the pin without puncturing the windpipe. Similar emergencies involving infants as young as 15–18 months swallowing coins are regularly reported, with objects blocking the food pipe or airway and causing immediate breathing distress.
In a striking February 2026 case, a one-year-old treated for “pneumonia” for two months was found to have a 1-cm LED bulb stuck in his right lung, which ENT surgeons removed in a rapid, high-stakes procedure lasting under a minute.
Doctors warn that objects entering the windpipe can cause suffocation and brain damage within minutes, stressing that sudden coughing, noisy breathing or unexplained distress in children should be treated as a medical emergency and evaluated by an ENT specialist without delay.
