NSS Camp Ends in Death: 21-Year-Old Student Found Hanging at Gujarat University Guest House

A tragic incident was reported at Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, on Friday, February 6, 2026, where 21-year-old Maheshwari Khachar, a third-year student of L.D. Arts College, was found dead in her room at the Gujarat University Guest House while attending a week-long National Service Scheme (NSS) camp.

Originally from Botad and residing as a paying guest in Ranip, Maheshwari was a senior NSS volunteer staying at the guest house opposite the NRI hostel for the camp. According to police, she attended NSS activities at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hall earlier in the day, returned to the guest house around 3:30 PM, and later failed to report for an assigned duty at the airport at 5 PM, raising concern.

When repeated calls went unanswered, a student was sent to check on her and discovered her body around 6 PM, following which authorities were alerted. Police confirmed that no suicide note was recovered and said her mobile phone and digital records are being examined to determine possible causes or triggers.

The university has expressed deep condolences and arranged counselling support for over 200 NSS participants affected by the incident, while Gujarat University police have registered a case of accidental death and are recording statements from friends, family members and faculty as part of the ongoing investigation.
