Love Marriages in Gujarat to Face Parent Notification Rule, Enhanced Legal Checks

The Gujarat government has introduced a new set of safeguards for love marriages, making parent intimation, stricter document verification, and detailed witness identification mandatory as part of the registration process. According to officials, the revised guidelines aim to ensure transparency, prevent fraud, and address complaints related to coercion, identity concealment, and misuse of legal provisions.

Under the new framework, couples opting for marriage registration will be required to submit verified identity documents, proof of age, and residential details, while also furnishing complete information of witnesses present during the ceremony or registration.

Authorities have clarified that informing parents does not amount to seeking consent in cases involving consenting adults, but is intended as an additional safeguard to prevent disputes and allegations later.

The government has also announced strict enforcement measures in dowry-related cases, warning of stringent legal action if any financial or material demands are found linked to the marriage. Officials stated that the move is designed to strengthen legal scrutiny, protect individuals—especially women—from exploitation, and ensure that marriages are conducted within a clear and accountable legal framework.
